Robert Hazel, 71, Vol-
taire, ND, passed away
Sunday, September 9,
2018, at his home.
Robert Spencer Hazel
was born August 23, 1947,
the son of Frank and Bar-
bara (Russell) Hazel, in
Calhoun County,
Marshall, MI.
After graduating high
school in Marshall, Robert
enlisted in the United
States Air Force on Sep-
tember 7, 1966. He proud-
ly served his country as a
member of the Civil En-
gineering Squadron at the
Minot Air Force Base in
Minot, ND. He was honor-
ably discharged with the
rank of Sergeant on Sep-
tember 4, 1970.
Robert married Janet
Martinson in 1968, and
from this union two sons
were born. Their twenty
year marriage later ended
in divorce, but they had
since remained good
friends.
Following his discharge
from the Air Force, Robert
moved his family back to
his hometown in Michi-
gan. He worked as a jour-
neyman press for the
Michigan Carton Com-
pany in Battle Creek, MI
until 1976, when he
moved his family back to
Velva, ND.
Robert worked as a
heavy equipment operator
for the Stanton Coal Mine
in Stanton, ND. He was
later employed by
McHenry County as a
county road grader and
most recently worked as a
night security guard for
CF Industries of Velva.
Robert loved the out-
doors and was an avid
hunter and fisherman. His
faithful companion, Lady
(a Golden Retriever), was
always by his side. He
was a member of the Unit-
ed Coal Miners Union,
longstanding member of
the Velva Fire Depart-
ment, Velva American Le-
gion Post #39 and the
Star City Golf Course. He
will be greatly missed by
his extensive family and
many friends.

cludes: Janet Hazel, Velva;
sons, Kyle Hazel (special
friend, Paula Reiswig),
Velva and Brad (Laura)
Hazel, Rosenberg, TX;
granddaughters, Shelby
Hazel, UND, Grand Forks,
Katie Hazel, Velva and
Alannah Hazel, Rosen-
berg, TX; grandson, Reid
Hazel, Rosenberg, TX;
step-grandson, Tristan
Dembrowski, Rosenberg,
TX; siblings, Ann (Robert)
Wills, Cathy Amaro and
David (Linda) Hazel, all of
Michigan; and many
siblings-in-law, nieces
and nephews.
Robert was preceded in
death by: his parents;
parents-in-law, Albert and
Ina Martinson; and
brother-in-law, Pedro
Amaro.
Memorial Service: Fri-
day, September 14, 2018,
at 1:00 p.m. at
Thompson-Larson Fun-
eral Home, Minot, ND.
Internment: Velva
Community Cemetery,
Velva, ND.
