Harley “Deane” Lautenschlager

April 24, 1929-Sept. 15, 2018

Harley Deane Lauten-

schlager, Bismarck, ND

passed away peacefully in

his sleep on September

15, 2018, at Augusta Place

in Bismarck.

Deane was born in Bert-

hold, North Dakota to

Paul and Dora (DeBilt)

Lautenschlager on April

24, 1929. His childhood

years were spent between

Berthold and Columbus;

he graduated from

Columbus High School.

Following his father’s

footsteps, Deane started

his grain buying career at

Tolley, ND in 1949. He

married Florence M.

Bauer on November 3,

1950. They spent their

early months of marriage

near Fort Rucker, Alaba-

ma. Throughout their

busy life they created

North Dakota family

homes in Plaza, Calio,

Ryder and Kenmare, as

well as Westby, Montana.

Their latest winters were

spent in Penitas, Texas

their much loved winter

home. Summer trips in-

cluded long stays in the

mountains of Montana.

They finally settled in at

Primrose Retirement

Community in Bismarck,

N.D. They spent several

happy years in this com-

munity making new

friends and participating

in varied activities.

Florence passed away on

April 18, 2017.

Deane proudly served

in the United States

Army. Other than grain

buying, he established

HDL trucking company

and became a solo cross

country truck driver. His

children loved to accom-

pany him on those trips.

The tug of farming opera-

tions, respect of farmers

and love of the land even-

tually pulled him back to

the grain buying business.

Together with Florence,

they purchased the Ken-

mare Grain Company and

continued to operate the

business for several years.

He enjoyed league bowl-

ing, fishing, camping and

time spent at the elevator

or out working on any

farm. He was especially

proud of his Tomahawk

Cub airplane; Florence

and Deane would often

buzz around the N.D.

countryside as an after-

noon diversion.

He strongly supported

the communities he lived

in; serving on the PTA

and local Catholic Church

boards. His drive was the

extreme definition of

work ethic; beginning at

age 12 and still working

until health forced him to

slow down at age 85. He

found joy in his daily

work. Many hours were

spent with the family,

never tiring of pulling wa-

ter skiers around and

around, teaching his chil-

dren how to bait a hook,

let’s not forget to check

the oil and change a flat.

He was most particular

about his girls being

self-sufficient. Deane’s

love as a Dad was uncon-

ditional, he taught his

children and grandchil-

dren to live life as they

choose, to love God and

family, work hard, respect

others, and lend a helping

hand.

His grandchildren and

great-grandchildren were

the lights of his life; he

held a special place for

each one in his heart and

never missed a chance to

brag of each one’s indivi-

dual accomplishments.

Deane is survived by:

his five children, Paulette

(Cortland) Dailey,
