Marla Byrd, 60, Garris-

on, ND, formerly of Bot-

tineau, ND, passed away

Friday, December 1, 2017,

surrounded by her family

following a valiant battle

with PSD, a form of Par-


Marla Kay Byrd was

born September 19, 1957,

the daughter of Dale and

Carol (Gravesen) Byrd in

Kenmare, ND. She was

raised and educated in

Kenmare, and graduated

from Kenmare High

School in 1975.

Following graduation,

Marla attended Minot

State University, where

she received her Bach-

elor’s Degree in Elemen-

tary Education in 1979. In

the fall of 1980 she began

teaching at Bottineau Ele-

mentary School. She

coached the 5th and 6th

grade girls’ basketball

teams for a number of

years and also taught

summer school. Marla

was nominated and

awarded numerous times

by her former students for

the Who’s Who Among

America’s Teachers. She

retired in April of 2013

following her PSD diag-


Marla was a member of

Trinity Lutheran Church

in rural Kenmare. She

was also the President of

the Bottineau Education

Association for NDEA and

NEA Legislature and a

member of the Bottineau

County Consortium.

Marla enjoyed garden-

ing. She also loved horses

and her dogs: Barney,

Charlie, Chester and

Baxter. She enjoyed trav-

eling to the Bahamas, Cal-

ifornia and Georgia. She

also loved spending time

her family, and her eyes

would light up when her

nephew Michael and her

great-niece and nephew

Riot and Irelyn would

come to visit. Marla made

a great impact on many

students’ lives, and can be

credited with their lasting

excellence in penman-

ship! Her love of teaching

and the care she extended

to her many students

throughout the years will

truly be her lasting legacy.

death by her parents, Dale

and Carol Byrd; and her

paternal and maternal


Funeral Service: Thurs-

day, December 7, 2017, at

1:00 p.m. at Trinity Luth-

eran Church, rural Ken-

mare, ND.

Visitation: There will be

no reviewal, but friends

are invited to sign the

9-11 a.m. at Thompson-

Larson Funeral Home,

Kenmare, ND.
