Bill was born August

28, 1934, the son of Irving

and Clara (Ehlers) Werle,

at the family home in Lay-

ton Township, McHenry

County, ND. He was

raised on the family farm

and attended the Layton

Country School until

1948, when the family

moved to Upham, ND. He

was baptized and con-

firmed on May 20, 1954 at

the Bloomfield Lutheran

Church of Upham.

Bill was once married

to Marlene Wager. They

made their home in

Towner, ND where Bill

worked at the Ford Garage

from 1950 – 1964. From

this union, five children

were born. The couple

would later divorce.

Bill was also a member

of the Army National

Guard. He proudly served

his country for 2 years un-

til his honorable

discharge on September

30, 1961.

He then moved to Velva

in 1965, and began work-

ing for the City Public

Works. Bill began search-

ing high and low for his

one true love, and found

her in Maryann (Strobel)

Opp. The two were mar-

ried on October 6, 1980

and they had 2 children

and 3 step-children.

Bill retired from the

City of Velva in 1996 and

the couple continued to

make their home in Velva.

He came out of retirement

and began farming for

Ronnie and Dianne

Pretzer for 9 years, which

he enjoyed! He also

worked for his daughter

Sara and son-in-law Dan-

ny as a handsome

dishwasher for 4 years at

the Mouse River Park in

Tolley, ND. He was al-

ways glad to see summer

come to an end!

Bill was a member of

Oak Valley Lutheran

Church of Velva. He loved

working outside, repairing

lawn mowers and making

crafts out of wood. He en-

joyed spending time with

his family and always tel-

ling jokes. He also loved

his furry little friends:

Tucker and Sadie.
