LaVerne was born
March 3, 1925 to Mathew
and Margaret (Finken)
Lies, in Douglas, ND,
where she was raised and
educated. She married
Rene’ Roberge in 1946.
They moved to the farm
in Douglas, ND in 1947.
This is where their two
children, Gordon and Di-
anne were born. Their
family moved to Willow
City, ND in 1955, where
she worked at the Notre
Dame Academy and at-
tended Minot State
University in the sum-
mers and evenings.
Through hard work she
received a Bachelor’s de-
gree in education.
After Rene’s passing,
she and her children
moved into the parish rec-
tory and worked as the
housekeeper. When the
academy closed in 1968,
she and her children
moved to Rolla, ND. At
this time she taught at the
Turtle Mountain Indian
Reservation in Belcourt,
ND. In 1971, she married
Clifford Malling and they
made their home at the
farm In Douglas. They
had 8 wonderful years to-
gether before Cliff’s pass-
ing in 1979. In 1982,
LaVerne moved to Garris-
on, ND and went back to
teaching school for
several years at St. Nicho-
las Catholic School. It
took some convincing
from Father Backes and
Sister Helen, but eventu-
ally she gave in.
LaVerne was very in-
volved in numerous
church and school activi-
ties throughout her life.
She also was a member of
the Nifty Fifties, St. Ann’s
Altar Society, and Notre
Dame Alter Society. She
enjoyed dancing, cards,
board games, gardening,
playing piano, sewing,
crafts, and quilting with
her sisters and friends.
She really enjoyed her
students and their parents
throughout her 33 years of
teaching. She loved pro-

to entertain her family
and friends whenever she
possibly could.
