Eileen Shabel
Feb. 1, 1924 – Aug. 25, 2017
Eileen Mary Shabel, 93,
Mohall, died Friday, Aug.
25, 2017, at the Good
Samaritan Nursing Home
in Mohall.
She was born in St.
Wendel, Minn., on Feb. 1,
1924, to Con and Ethel
(Roche) Meagher. She
was reared there and at-
tended school in Holding-ford, Minn.
She married Roman
“Butch” Shabel on June
26, 1940. They lived in
Minnesota and Michigan
before moving to Mohall
in 1950.
In 1954, she began her
career at the ASCS/FSA
and retired in 1986. It
was a job that she truly
enjoyed as she got to
know the many farmers
from the area whom she
looked forward to seeing
and helping every time
they came in the office.
When asked about work,
she would say, “I never
worked a day in my life.
You can’t call it work
when you love what you
do.”
After retirement, she
made use of the driver’s
license she obtained at the
age of 58. And with her
Rosary in her pocket, she
made many trips visiting
family and friends. She
loved people and never
met a stranger, she said;
and was a very generous
person who welcomed
into her home with open
arms several family
members, foster children
and anyone who needed a
bed and a meal.
She loved spending
time with her children,
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren
whether it be treating
them to her homemade
chicken noodle soup, ap-
ple pie or showing one of
her dance moves. She
was proud to say she was
an Irish, Catholic, Demo-
crat.
Eileen was a member of
St. Jerome Catholic
Church, Mohall, and
served on the church
board and also the
Women’s Altar Society;
church was very impor-
tant to Eileen. She loved
gardening and caring for
her yard.
