Walter Edward
Western, 83, Stanley, died
in Minot on December 29,
2016. His funeral service
will be Monday January 2.
2017 at 11:00 am at the
American Lutheran
Church in Stanley. Visita-
tion is Monday from 10 to
noon at the Springan Fun-
eral Home in Stanley and
prior to the service in the
church. Burial is in Fair-
view Cemetery in Stanley.
He was born in rural
Stanley, ND on July 21,
1933 to Albert and Esther
(Hellum) Western.
Walter had a twin sister,
but she died in child-
birth. He was the fourth
of five surviving chil-
dren.
Walter’s parents were
original homesteaders in
Mountrail County, settling
in the area in 1906.
Walter grew up in a home
with no electricity, no
telephone, and no indoor
plumbing. He grew up
hunting in his family’s
coulees and playing good
natured tricks on his si-
blings and classmates.
His formal education con-
sisted of one room schools
in the Rosebud school dis-
trict ending in 1947. He
served his country in the
United States Army from
1957-1959 and was called
up again during the build-
ing of the Berlin Wall in
1961-1962.
Walter worked as a
farmhand for several
farms in the Lostwood,
ND area and he later start-
ed farming on his own
and farmed small grains
in the Lostwood area for
the rest of his life.
Walter will be remem-
bered for his quick wit
and his ability to make his
friends and family laugh.
He will also be remem-
bered for his ability to talk
his way out of almost all
of the trouble he would
get himself into as a
youth. Walter loved gui-
tars, big trucks,
motorcycles,country
music, firearms, and col-
lecting coins.
He is survived by his
brothers, Robert Western
and Albert A. Western
(Mary) of Stanley, and his
sister Velma Enger of
Palermo, along with
several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in
death by parents, Albert J.
and Esther Western , sis-
ter Evelyn Vincent, Sister
in law Kay Western and
Brother in law Don Enger.
