Colorado, died January

12, 2017 at the Life Care

Center of Stonegate. Fol-

lowing her wishes she

will be cremated and in-

terred at the Parshall

Cemetery.

Memorial Service: A

graveside memorial ser-

vice for Helen will be held

this summer in Parshall,

North Dakota.

Helen was born on May

18, 1920 on the family

farm two miles south of

Van Hook, ND the fifth of

eight children born to Carl

and Martha (Vestrheim)

Sand. She was raised and

educated in Van Hook.

She attended Minot State

Teachers College and

earned her teaching certi-

ficate in 1940. She taught

at a country school south

of Parshall for two years

and married Donald in

1940. They started farm-

ing and later opened an

auto and farm implement

dealership in Parshall in

1955 where she worked as

a bookkeeper. They had

five children, and in addi-

tion to raising their chil-

dren, Helen was busy gar-

dening, sewing, preparing

meals for the hired men

and delivering meals to

the fields during harvest

as they continued to farm.

In 1968, Helen and

Donald retired, and in

1970, they moved to

Mesa, AZ. They were avid

travelers. Helen and Don

traveled by motor home

throughout North Ameri-

ca visiting friends, rela-

tives and exploring new

areas. In the 1980s, they

traveled to Europe several

times visiting their son

Richard in France and her

relatives in Norway.

Donald died in 2004, and

in 2005, Helen moved

into an assisted living

community in Littleton,

CO to be near her son and

daughter. Helen enjoyed

cooking, crocheting, play-

ing cards and even the

grandchildren caught on

that Grandma was out to

win.

Helen’s father died on

September 1, 1965 at the

age of 84 and her mother

died on January 18, 1993

at the age of 105. Both

emigrated from Norway

and came to the United

States, settling in May-

ville, ND. She was also

preceded in death by: her

son, Richard Jon

Schroeder; her husband,

Donald Edward

Schroeder; and her si-

blings Lawrence, Signe,

Alice, Molfrid, Gudrun,

Margret and Melvin.

Survivors: Helen is sur-

vived by her children:

Bonnie C. Eklund (Orvis

W.), Fargo, ND; Susan A.

Sanford (James A.), Eloy,

AZ; Donald E. Schroeder,

Jr. (Julie M. Satermo), Lit-

tleton, CO; and Robert K.

Schroeder (Rebecca G.

Price), Phoenix, AZ.

Helen had ten grandchil-

dren, ten

great-grandchildren and

one

great-great-granddaughter.

She is also survived by

brother-in-law William

Schroeder, Minot, ND and

sister-in-law Delores

(Parshall) Sand, New

Town, ND.

or the United Church of

Christ.
