The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers declared Lake Sakakawea “ice free” as of 11:30 a.m. Monday. High winds that hit the reservoir this past Sunday removed what little ice cover remained. Lake Sakakawea wasn’t declared frozen until January 12 of this year. The 107 days of ice compares to 89 days of ice cover a year ago. The longest Lake Sakakawea was covered in ice was 165 days from November 23, 1955 to May 8, 1956. The shortest ice season was 69 days from Jan. 18 to March 27, 2012.
