Matthew Sponsel, Minot, charged with child neglect

Matthew James Sponsel, 22, Minot, is accused of consuming marijuana and alcohol and leaving his 1 1/2 year old son unattended in his apartment on April 5.

Sponsel is charged with Class C felony child neglect as well as possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, the manager of the southeast Minot apartment complex called police after he heard fighting coming from one of the garage units at 11:06 p.m. April 5.

Police heard loud noise, such as banging and grunting that sounded like fighting, coming from the garage. The garage door opened and Sponsel was standing on the other side of the door. He tried to hide a bag containing marijuana behind his back. Police placed him under arrest. A broken glass marijuana pipe was found in Sponsel’s vehicle. Sponsel told police that he and his child’s mother had a verbal argument and he was upset. He also told police that his toddler was in the apartment alone. Police checked on the child and found him unharmed. There were digital scales with marijuana residue in the apartment.

The boy was turned over to his mother, who had left him with Sponsel.
