Jacob Hughes, Minot, sentenced for assault

Jacob Jerome Hughes, 24, originally charged with Class C felony aggravated assault, pleaded guilty Thursday to an amended charge of Class A misdemeanor assault.

Hughes was drunk at a party and got into an argument with another man. He reportedly punched the other man in the face multiple times and broke his nose. The victim had also reportedly been verbally belligerent. Hughes told police he retaliated when the other man pushed him multiple times. Hughes had asked the other man multiple times to leave him alone before he punched him. The other man did not punch Hughes.

Hughes, who appeared at the hearing without a lawyer, told Judge Gary Lee that he did not want to go back to jail and was willing to accept the plea deal offered by the state. Hughes is currently on probation.

Lee followed the terms of the plea deal and sentenced Hughes to 360 days in jail, all suspended, and 18 months supervised probation. Hughes must also obtain a chemical dependency evaluation and pay $1,581.96 in restitution and $325 in court costs.
