David Reed, Minot, sentenced for possession of child porn

David Alexander Reed, 23, Minot, will serve about four years in prison, followed by three years of supervised probation, for possession of child pornography.

Reed entered Alford pleas in July to five Class C felony counts of possession of child porn.

Sentences on the charges are concurrent.

Judge Doug Mattson also ordered him to pay court costs, to undergo sex offender treatment if it is deemed necessary, and to register as a sex offender.

According to court documents, Reed uploaded five sexually explicit videos and two sexually explicit Excel files of girls between the ages of 12 and 14 to a Dropbox account in August 2016, when he was 20. Other images associated with Reed’s account contained pornographic images, but police could not tell how old the people in them were.

Reed had been an active member of the U.S. Air Force at the time of his arrest. He had no prior criminal history.

At his sentencing hearing, Reed apologized for his actions.

An investigator who evaluated him before the sentencing hearing noted that he has a strong support system, responds well to supervisors on the job, shows no interest in children and said he has the ability to form appropriate relationships, according to statements made at the hearing. The evaluation deemed him at low risk to reoffend, though a sex offender risk assessment was not done as it was not a hands-on offense. The evaluator indicated Reed will respond well to probation.
