National Merit Scholarship semifinalist

Brian Friedt, a student at Harvey High School, is a semifinalist for a National Merit Scholarship.

Semifinalists are chosen based on their scores on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

To become finalists, students must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about their academic records, participation in school and community activites, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Seminalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test, according to a press release.

Scholarship winners will be chosen from among the seminfinalists. Three types of National Merit Scholarships are offered: the $2,500 scholarships funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, by the universities the student will attend and by corporations and business organizations.
