Space still a concern at middle schools

Space issues continue to be a concern in the Minot Public Schools this school year, said Minot Public Schools Superintendent Mark Vollmer.

Jim Hill Middle School is over capacity and Erik Ramstad Middle School is at or near capacity. The district uses portable classrooms to manage the space issue.

Larger classes have been the norm in the early elementary grades and the enrollment numbers seem to be stable from year to year. As those classes move up through the grades, there will continue to be space challenges at the middle and high school buildings.

Voters approved a bond issue a few years ago that paid for the construction of John Hoeven Elementary and of additions at other elementaries. Vollmer said the district will likely hold information and feedback sessions this school year to give the public a chance to learn about the challenges and to give input on how they want to address them.

Getting voters to approve another bond issue might be a challenge at a time when property taxes in the Minot area have soared. However, Vollmer said patrons of the district are responsive when they are shown genuine needs.

Information sessions will be open for all patrons, people who have children and grandchildren in the schools and those who do not. Public school education concerns everyone, he said.

The sessions have not yet been scheduled.
