Ward County 4-H Achievement Days results announced

The 86th Annual Ward County 4-H Achievement Days were held June 18-21. The days were filled with fun, excitement, and enthusiasm for 216 Ward County 4-H youth who participated.

The 4-H Open Horse Show was judged by Tandra Thrall of Stanton. Horse show events included five Western, Four English, four times and the horse training project. Belt buckles were awarded to those who earned the most points in each Senior, Intermediate and Junior age groups, sponsored by Minot Trail Riders and the Thunshelle Family. Buckles went to: Champion Senior Horseman Sidney Lovelace, Sawyer, Reserve Champion Horseman Ryley Moore, Berthold, Champion Intermediate Horseman Macey Moore, Berthold, Reserve Champion Horseman InDee Sue Thunshelle, Minot; Champion Junior Horseman Olivia Johnson, Minot, and Reserve Champion Horseman Hailey Schauer, Carpio. Horse ribbons awarded: Grand Champion (36); Reserve Champion (29); Blue (56); Red (43); and White (28).

The dog show was judged by Rachel Jestice of Ryder. Dog show awards were: Champion Senior Dog Obedience Harleigh Reimche, Burlington, Champion Intermediate Dog Obedience Haley Buck , Minot, and Champion Junior Dog Obedience to Kyleigh Wiltse, Minot. Awards for Dog showmanship went to Champion Senior H. Reimche, Champion Intermediate Sara Birch, Minot Air Force Base, and Champion Junior Elizabeth Hanson, Velva.

The cat and pet show was judged by Marcie Kohler of Minot. Cat show awards were: Champion Senior Showman H. Reimche; Champion Intermediate Cat Showman Marissa Beck, Minot; and Champion Junior Cat Showman Olivia Johnson, Minot. Pet show included guinea pigs and miniature horses. Pet show awards were: Champion Senior Small Animal Showman to H. Reimche and Champion Intermediate Small Animal Showman H. Buck.

Ribbons — blue (728), red (144), white (9), and Cloverbud (130) — were awarded for static (non-living) exhibits. Ribbons are sponsored by Minot Area Chamber of Commerce. Other awards were: Best of Show awards were: Plant Science Teen Job Bachmeier, Granville, Pre-teen Morgan Keen, Donnybrook; Environment and Earth Science Teen Sarah Potts, Minot, Pre-teen Cole Whitcher, Minot; Engineering and Technology Teen Thomas Schauer, Carpio, Pre-teen Kaydn Turnbow, Berthold; Citizenship, Personal Development and Leadership Teen Hannah Remington, Minot, Pre-Teen Isabel Engelhard, Carpio; Creative Arts Teen Madilyn Berg, Douglas, Pre-teen Landen Jansen, Minot; Healthy Living Teen Kennedy Limke, Carpio, Pre-teen Anne Schauer, Carpio; Family and Consumer Science Teen Kayla VoVilla, Minot, Pre-teen I. Engelhard; Animal Exhibits Teen J. Bachmeier, Pre-teen H. Buck. Other static awards given were: Champion Leather Craft to M. Berg; Champion Fiber Arts: Quilting to K. VoVilla; Champion Sheaf Exhibit to J. Bachmeier; Champion Harvest Grain and Seed Exhibit to Kiley Whillock, Kenmare; and Champion Agriculturist to J. Bachmeier.

Livestock shows on Wednesday were judged by Ethan Johnson of Andover, S.D.. The swine show awards were: Champion Senior Swine Showman S. Lovelace; Champion Intermediate Swine Showman Brekken Bachmeier, Granville; and Champion Junior Swine Showman Braden Bailey, Towner; Champion Market Swine B. Bailey; and Champion Supreme Female Swine Sophie Bachmeier, Granville. Swine ribbons awarded: Grand Champion (10), Reserve Champion (7) and Blue (39).

Sheep show awards were: Champion Senior Sheep Showman T. Schauer; Champion Intermediate Sheep Showman Matthew Schauer, Carpio; and Champion Junior Sheep Showman Miranda Novodvorsky, Douglas. Champion Supreme Female Sheep awards went to Jacob Scheresky, Des Lacs, and Champion Market Lamb to Tate Novodvorsky, Douglas. Sheep ribbons awarded: Grand Champion (6); Reserve Champion (6); and Blue (17).

Goat show awards were: Champion Senior Meat Goat Showman Fletcher Hennessy, Des Lacs, Champion Intermediate Meat Goat Showman Ethan Myers, Minot, and Champion Junior Meat Goat Showman Karter Myers, Minot. Receiving Champion Senior Dairy Goat Showman was J. Bachmeier, Champion Intermediate Dairy Goat Showman Will Bachmeier, Granville, and Champion Junior Dairy Goat Showman Jacob Saunders, Minot. Buckles sponsored by Rafter DM Boer Goats were awarded for Champion Commercial Goat Aidan McMahon, Granville; Champion Percentage Boer Goat F. Hennessy; Champion Purebred Boer Goat F. Hennessy; Champion Dairy Goat J. Bachmeier; and Champion Market Goat M. Novodvorsky. Goat ribbons awarded: Grand Champion (13); Reserve Champion (11); and Blue (59).

A dairy cattle show had entries from Cloverbuds Afton and Brooklyn Ost, Minot.

Beef cattle show awards were: Champion Senior Beef Showmanship F. Hennessy; Champion Intermediate Beef Showman Aspen Hennessy, Des Lacs; and Champion Junior Beef Showman Addison Neshem, Berthold; Champion Beef Supreme Female Eli Hennessy, Des Lacs; and Champion Market Beef Kate Knecht, Des Lacs. Beef ribbons awarded: Grand Champion (12); Reserve Champion (8); blue (67); and Red (2).

Round robin contest was held on June 20 where youth who received grand and reserve champion in livestock (beef, goat, sheep, and wwine) compete against each other to see who is the best showman of all the species. Round robin buckles were awarded to: Champion Senior Round Robin Showman J. Scheresky, sponsored by Superior Auto; Champion Intermediate Round Robin Showman Kaden Korgel, Minot; and Champion Junior Round Robin Showman K. Myers, both sponsored by Gooseneck Implement of Minot.

The rabbit and poultry show was judged by Shane Ringdahl of Jamestown. Rabbit show awards were: Champion Senior Rabbit Showman H. Reimche; Champion Intermediate Rabbit Showman Colt Kersten, Max; Champion Junior Rabbit Showman Danny Kersten, Max; and Champion Overall Rabbit Wyatt Kersten, Max. Poultry show awards were: Champion Senior Poultry Showman J. Bachmeier; Champion Intermediate Poultry Showman C. Kersten; Champion Junior Poultry Showman D. Kersten; and Overall Champion Poultry C. Kersten.

Ag Olympics is a very popular event during Achievement Days, a fun-and-games team competition open to all youth. Youth put together teams of four individuals of which are from at least two 4-H Clubs, no more than two seniors and at least one junior, and they must come up with a fantastic team name. Adults can participate too. The event was put on by Amy Schauer and Karen Hennessy and the emcee was Gregg Schaefer. The first, second and third-place teams received prizes sponsored by Heartland Ag. The first-place team was Shaving on the Beach consisting of T. Schauer, E. Myers, K. Korgel, and Tyson Perdue. Second-place team was Water Boys consisting of Mark and Matthew Schauer; David Scheresky; and Sutton Hennessy. The third-place team was Ranch and Cattle consisting of Gus Engelhard; Jayd Novak; Brekken Bachmeier; and Layne Novak.

This year’s Friend of 4-H Business was awarded to Birdsall Grain and Seed, known to be supporters of 4-H, particularly in funding awards and 4-H teams. The Friend of 4-H Individual award went to Bob Finken of Douglas. Finken has been involved with Ward County 4-H for the past 28 years as a steadfast volunteer, always willing to step in and help wherever needed as well as share his parliamentary procedure knowledge.

Outstanding Club Exhibit Display award was given to 4-H clubs who decorated their static booth the best. first place and cash prize went to Afton Country Kids, second place to Rocky Acres, and third went to the Prairie Tumbleweeds.

During the awards ceremony 11 4-H members graduating from high school were recognized: Rylie Oen, Minot; H. Reimche; J. Novak, Minot; J. Bachmeier; Jaden Neshem, Berthold; Savannah Peters, Glenburn; Hope Scheresky, Max; J. Scheresky; Peyton Sundsbak, Des Lacs; Shaylee Miller, Deering; and Laura Vangsness, Berthold.

Ward County 4-H scholarships sponsored by SRT Communications and Ward County 4-H Council were recognized: S. Miller, L. Vangsness, J. Scheresky, J. Novak and Kayla Schaefer, Des Lacs.

The Cody Hansen Memorial Scholarship recipient was S. Miller.

The Reiny Inman Memorial “Character Award” was given to K. Korgel. The award is given to a youth displaying the six pillars of character 4-H of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

The Chelsey Lies Memorial “All Around Animal Showman” award was given to D. Kersten. The award is based on a point system and the individual must show livestock.

Champion Herdsmen cash prizes were awarded to individuals or families who best kept their animal pens clean and assisted others throughout the whole week of Achievement Days, sponsored by Harvey Quarter Horse Ranch. Champion Beef Herdsmen Emily Merck, Granville; Champion Sheep Herdsmen Todd and Kelly Finke Family, Berthold; Champion Swine Herdsmen S. Lovelace; and Champion Goats Herdsmen Kinley Schilla, Makoti.

Half of the proceeds of the 4-H auction went to Abby Mikkelson, a 4-H member who was severely injured during a watercraft accident a week before Achievement Days. 4-H families rallied together and created several opportunities to raise money for the Mikkelson family. Other than the silent auction, there was a “Tie a Ribbon for Abby” frame, free-will donation for ice cream after the premium sale and free-will donation for the meal during the Ward County Shootout Livestock Show on June 22. A total of $2,042.47 was raised.

A Pee Wee Pig Show, open to all youth seven years old and under, is held during Achivement Days. The youth guide a pig in the show ring with the help of an older 4-H member. Each Pee Wee received a synch backpack prize sponsored by Bachmeier Show Pigs.

The Premium Sale held during Achievement Days is an opportunity for 4-H youths to show the county their achievements with their livestock (beef, goats, sheep, and swine) projects. They lead their animal through the show ring during the auction and “buyers” pay premiums for animals. This year’s Premium Sale had 71 youth and 28 buyers.
