Minot City Band to present final summer concert

Submitted Photo Tyler Schwan, a former Surrey resident, is the featured soloist for the Minot City Band’s final summer concert.

The Minot City Band under the direction of Joseph Alme will present its final summer concert on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the band shell at Oak Park.

The featured soloist will be former Surrey resident and high school graduate Tyler Schwan. A professional trombonist and cruise ship music director, Schwan is presently employed with Carnival Cruise Lines.

Schwan grew up in the Minot area, where his love for music began. After graduating from Surrey High School, he attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. in 2014, Schwan earned his bachelor of music education. He started his career as a trombonist with Carnival Cruise Lines in 2013 and is currently a music manager, music director, and trombonist with the company.

During his time with Carnival, Schwan has travelled throughout the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. In September he will embark on the Carnival Splendor, which will port in California, Hawaii, and the Mexican Riviera.

With the Minot City Band, Scwan will perform the challenging and exciting “Morceau Syphonique” by Alexander Guilmont.

Concert band works by William Beebe, Glen Osser, and John Philip Sousa, will be featured on the program. In addition to the coveted arrangement of Carmen Dragon’s “America the Beautiful,” the band will feature the trombone section with the Wim Laseroms composition “Magic Slides.”

The concert is free and open to the public.
