Ward County 4-H members win in Communication Arts Contest
Eleven Ward County 4-H members showcased their public speaking abilities at the annual 4-H Communication Arts Contest in Minot on May 1.
The group consisted of Elizabeth and Makayla Kraft, Minot; Sadie Lemer, Berthold; Dalyce Leslie, Deering; Tyson Perdue, Minot; Lydia Repnow, Minot; Garrett, Raelyn and Trent Williams, Ryder; and Austin and Molly Wingenbach, Minot. The contest is divided into Senior, Junior and Cloverbud divisions. Seniors are youth in grades 7-12, Juniors are in grades 3-6 and Cloverbuds are youth in Kindergarten to second grade.
Spectators saw it all including a Dramatic Presentation about writing a report about George Washington – with a twist, to a demonstration on how to make delicious cheesy biscuits.
Following the 12 presentations, judges compared scores and ribbon awards were given. Judges included NDSU Extension Family Community Wellness agent Ellen Bjelland, Ward County Library Administrator Kerri Boetcher and Minot State University Enrollment Director Katie Tyler. Room hosts included Leslie and Shirrell Ott.

— Senior Dramatic Presentation Team – G. & T. Williams “Dyeing,” Blue Ribbon.
— Senior Illustrated Talk – Repnow “I Have to Read How Many Books?” Grand Champion.
– Senior Prepared Speech – Repnow “Silence,” Grand Champion.
_ Senior Video Production Team – G. & T. Williams “A Lego Stop Motion Film,” Grand Champion.
_ Junior Demonstration – R. Williams “Cheesy Biscuits,” Grand Champion.

All 4-H members who participated in the Ward County 4-H Communication Arts contest can participate in the District 4-H Communication Arts contest at Bottineau Middle/High School on June 1. Seniors who receive Grand Champion in their category at the District competition receive a scholarship to attend the Extension Youth Conference at North Dakota State University Campus in June. The conference is geared toward developing leadership skills and networking with youth across the state.
Winners in each Senior or Junior division, team/individual and subject area at the District Contest qualify to compete at state contest held during the North Dakota State Fair on July 22 starting at 2 p.m. in the Upper Atrium in the State Fair Center. The District and State contests are open to spectators.
