Minot Daily News, Chamber partnering for candidate forums

Once again this year, Minot Daily News will present opportunities for the public to meet, question and learn about candidates in May forums in advance of the June election – this year in partnership with the Minot Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re very happy to partner with the Chamber this year for the centerpiece forums in the community once again in 2018,” said Minot Daily News Publisher Dan McDonald.

Forums are tentatively scheduled for May 9 (Park Board), May 16 (School Board), May 23 (Minot City Council) and May 24 (Minot mayor). Target times are 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. with venues still to be announced.

“Given the number of races and candidates, the size of last year’s audience and the time needed to do these right, we decided to partner with the Chamber to sponsor four forums instead of trying to fit every race into one evening,” said MDN Editor Michael W. Sasser. “Additionally, both sites and formats will vary. We envision forum formats for three of the four evenings, with the mayoral event being more of a debate format.”

McDonald also said that a second round of forums is in development in advance of the November election when several other races will be decided.

“We’re proud of the work we have done the past couple of years bringing candidates and voters together and intend to continue our efforts, and to improve our formats each year,” McDonald said. “We have gone from around 60 guests in 2016 to five times that number last year, and we anticipate our partnership this year with the Minot Chamber of Commerce to help continue the growth of these important civic events.”

Additional details will be announced soon.
