This photograph was taken in La Baule, France in 1953 by Jim Movchan of Minot. Movchan was a U.S. Army engineer stationed at La Baule when he came across this service station named Minot. “Man, I gotta’ take a picture of that!” recalled Movchan of his reaction at seeing a business in France bearing the same name as his hometown. La Baule is located on the west coast of France, not far from the harbor where German submarines were housed and serviced during World War II. It is a seaside resort known for its luxury hotels, casinos and boasts a sandy beach more than seven miles long.
