Saltwater and oil spill reported in Killdeer area

KILLDEER – Deep Creek Adventures Co. reported to state regulators on Monday a saltwater and oil spill at the Signalness Fee 3-10 saltwater disposal well about 25 miles north of Killdeer. The spill occurred Jan. 30.

The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division said 23,940 gallons of saltwater and 420 gallons of oil were released and recovered, with most of the fluid remaining inside the diking. A minimal amount of fluid was reported to have misted outside the diking, but remained on the location. The incident occurred when automatic shutoff devices failed and caused tanks to overflow.

A state inspector has been to the location and will monitor any additional clean-up. The state is investigating the delay in filing an initial spill report.
