Pipeline leak creates produced water spill

BISMARCK – A pipeline leak resulted in a spill of produced water spill in Divide County, according to the North Dakota Health Department.

The pipeline is part of a gathering system owned by USG Bakken Midstream. The spill was discovered on Sunday about three miles north of Fortuna and was reported the same day. Produced water is a by-product of oil and gas development.

Initial estimates indicate about 200 barrels, or 8,400 gallons, of produced water were released from a six-inch pipeline, impacting rangeland. The leak occurred at an above-ground flange of the pipeline. Personnel from the health department and North Dakota Industrial Commission were inspecting the site Monday and will continue to monitor the investigation.
