Former TJ Maxx employee receives probation for embezzling $8,700

A 27-year-old former TJ Maxx employee was given a deferred sentence for one year and ordered to pay $8,700 in restitution for embezzling from her employer between June and September 2017.

Brittany Sharde Haynes pleaded guilty Thursday to Class C felony theft by deception, according to court records.

Judge Gary Lee ordered Haynes to serve one year of supervised probation and deferred imposition of sentence for a year. She must also pay $1,100 in court costs.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Haynes admitted to processing up to 300 fraudulent receipts while working as a cashier. She would keep a customer’s receipt or print out a gift receipt and then process a return and take the money. Haynes also told an investigator she would “return” items that she had bought for herself but didn’t actually return them. She kept both the items purchased and the money for the return. She estimated she had stolen about $8,700 over 20 weeks of working for the store.
