Man sentenced for simple assault

A 50-year-old Minot man was sentenced to unsupervised probation and ordered to take an anger management class for punching another man in the face in June 2016.

John R. Erickson pleaded guilty on Thursday in district court in Minot to Class B misdemeanor simple assault. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, with all suspended, and 360 days unsupervised probation. He must also take the anger management class and pay $779 in court costs, including $279 in restitution.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Erickson was angry because he believed the male victim had parked his equipment on Erickson’s property at Rice Lake. The man believed he had parked his heavy equipment on a property that adjoins Erickson’s.

Erickson told the alleged victim that he owed him $2,500 for parking the heavy equipment on his land, adopted a fighting stance and tried to kick the male victim. He then punched the man in the face with a closed fist and knocked him to the ground. The man told police he experienced pain and had headaches for days after he was punched.

Witnesses told the Ward County Sheriff’s Office that they witnessed Erickson assault the man.

The incident happened on June 2, 2016, and a charge was filed on Feb. 7, 2017.

A jury trial in the case had been scheduled for Wednesday, but was canceled when a plea deal was worked out, according to court records.
