Man gets probation for beating, choking woman

A 25-year-old Minot man was given probation Wednesday for beating and choking a 23-year-old woman at a southeast Minot residence on Aug. 1.

Michael Lyndon McDonald pleaded guilty to assault, a Class A misdemeanor. He had originally been charged with felony aggravated assault.

Judge Gary Lee sentenced McDonald to 360 days in jail, all suspended except the 11 days he has already served, and 18 months supervised probation. He must also obtain a chemical dependency evaluation.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court, McDonald was angry with the woman and struck her multiple times with his fist or an open hand. He then put his hands around her throat and choked her. The woman told McDonald to stop and was able to push him off her and crawl to the door. She then got up and ran to a relative’s trailer.

Police noted that the victim was bleeding from her right eye, that her right eye was swollen, her left foot and the right side of her head were also bleeding and she had bruising on her legs and arms.
