Dakota Cattle Conference planned for Minot

The Dakota Cattle Conference will be held Dec. 6-7 in the Holiday Inn Riverside in Minot.

A premier cattle event in north central and northwestern North Dakota, for the conference North Dakota State University Extension Service is bringing together experts from the northern U.S. and Canada to discuss the cattle industry and what producers need to know.

Following the Heartland Ag Showcase being held in Minot, the cattle conference will kick off with a free cattle breeding workshop on Wednesday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. Topics include tools that producers can use to help them get what they want out of their herd. Dr. Bob Weaver, KSU Extension beef-genetic specialist, is the speaker. A dinner and social will follow at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Dec 7, will be a full day of discussion from cattle experts on drought challenges and issues, alternatives to supplementing low-quality feed and much more.

Registration is at 9 a.m. Cost is $40 with lunch included. The conference is from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

NDSU Extension area specialists who have been working with producers throughout North Dakota this summer will be on hand to talk management, what to watch for and economics.

Better Ranching Through Better Stockmanship – Curt Pate, Montana rancher.

Market Trends, Influences & Price Outlook – Jim Rob, Livestock Marketing Information Center.

Ranching in Kazakhstan – Brandon Biwer, Divide County NDSU ag agent.

Wintering Cows: Late Season Grazing & Supplementation – Dr. Bart Lardner, Western Beef Development Center, Saskatchewan.

Drought Challenges & Management – NDSU specialists.

Alternatives to Supplementing Low Quality Feed & Stretching Hay – Dr. Carl Dahlen.

Understanding Nitrate Risk & Toxicities in Drought Conditions – Dr. Gerald Stokka.

Economic Considerations: Cost to Feed, Care & Transport Cows; USDA Livestock Forage Program, Tim Petry.

Pasture Recovery & Solar Watering Options – Dr. Kevin Sedivec.
