City coyotes raise awareness

Coyotes and pets risky mix

Submitted Photo This coyote was photographed in northwest Minot earlier this week. It appeared to have emerged from a coulee bordering the backyards of several homes.

Coyotes have been seen within the City of Minot for several years. Usually they are cha#sed and find their own way out of the city. However, more always seem to move in, especially during the winter months.

Recently a sighting of a coyote in northwest Minot, in the area of Glacial Drive, has caused some concern for homeowners who let their pets out into their backyards. The concern is that a hungry coyote may make a meal of a favorite pet.

Glory Kramlich had one such encounter recently after letting her miniature dachshund, Hildie, outside.

“It was about sunset. I heard her bark, which she never does,” said Kramlich. “I looked and there was a coyote about 10 feet from her. I screamed and it ran away.”

One of Kramlich’s neighbors, also owners of a small dog, alerted the Kramlichs to a similar experience. To date though, there are apparently no reports of missing animals attributed to coyotes in the city.

Deer, turkeys and rabbits are known to inhabit several wooded areas in the city, including coulee land in northwest Minot.

“We were never a wildlife refuge but we are becoming one,” remarked Kramlich in jest. “My neighbor saw the coyote and was kind of startled.”

Coyotes fall under the umbrella of what has become known as “nuisance” animals in the city. Minot City Council is currently examining what response, if any, is necessary.
