Author Candace Simar returns to Norsk Høstfest

The Hostfest is full of authors this year. Since the Hostfest is full of Scandinavian history and heritage, every one of the authors brings something to the table for visitors to the event.

Candace Simar is an award-winning author and poet who nurtures a passion for Scandinavian history. The grandchild of Norwegian immigrants, she grew up listening to stories about the early days of Minnesota.

“I decided to write books about the history of my family and the area after I told my college-age children about my great-grandfather who was a stage coach driver near Fort Abercrombie around the time of the Sioux Uprising, and they didn’t know anything about the uprising,” Simar said.

Her son had told her to write a book and Simar took the challenge. She spent countless hours doing research and combined it with the stories she grew up with to create her novels.

“I like to imagine what it was like for ordinary people to live through those times. They went through a lot and were very tough,” Simar said.

This will be her seventh year at Hostfest. She will spend her days in the Author’s Corner. From 10-11 a.m. each day, Simar will be doing book signings. Then at 3 p.m. she will talk about her research, writing, and read parts of her books. Between these times she will be at her booth for guests to visit with.

Simar has written seven books: “Abercrombie Trail,” “Pomme De Terre,” “Birdie,” “Blooming Prairie,” “Shelterbelts,” “Dear Homefolks,” and “Farm Girls.”
