Emulsion spill in Burke County

The North Dakota Department of Health was notified Sunday of a 100-barrel oil emulsion spill in Burke County, about 6.5 miles southwest of Bowbells. The spill resulted from an equipment failure at a well pad operated by Cornerstone Natural Resources LLC. Oil emulsion is a mixture of crude oil and brine produced from a well and before treatment.

An estimated 25 barrels of oil and 75 barrels of brine were released. An unknown amount of this emulsion flowed off the well pad and into an adjacent slough.

Cornerstone has deployed booms in the slough to contain the emulsion, and an environmental remediation company has begun pumping water out of the slough and excavating contaminated soils. NDDoH personnel have been on the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and cleanup.
