Two charged for robbery at Astoria Hotel

Backman

Two Minot men are accused of robbing another man at the Astoria Hotel on Sunday.

Nicholis Jay Backman, 26, and Jarrod Donald Henderson, 34, are both charged with robbery, a Class B felony that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Both made initial appearances in district court in Minot on Tuesday and bond was set at $20,000 for each. Because a weapon was allegedly used in commission of the robbery, the state would require a two-year minimum prison sentence.

Backman told Judge Stacy Louser that no bail bondsman in North Dakota or in surrounding states will accept his business and asked if the bond could be a percentage bond or lower. Louser acknowledged it was quite a “hefty bail” but left it at $20,000 cash or corporate surety.

Henderson gave yes or no answers in response to Louser’s questions. He was also making an appearance on multiple past charges.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, the alleged robbery victim told police that two women had been in the hotel room with him. The women let in two men, whom the victim said robbed him of about $400. He said the men took his suitcase, which contained cash in different denominations. He told police he fought with one of the men in the bathroom as he tried to get out the door.

While police were at the hotel, a dispatcher told them that Jarrod Henderson had hit a woman and was outside a northeast Minot residence with a gun. Henderson was said to have been picked up by a white vehicle, which was headed south. Henderson’s own vehicle was stuck in the snow. The Ward County Sheriff’s Department located the white vehicle that had picked up Henderson and found three people in it. Deputies found an open suitcase in the vehicle with clothes spread around along with cash.

According to the affidavit, a woman told deputies that the domestic violence incident with Jarrod Henderson started with a robbery at the Astoria Hotel. She said they had robbed a man at the hotel.

Backman had several hundred dollars in his shoe and Henderson matched the description of one of the male robbers at the hotel. Backman allegedly told police that the robbery was the woman’s idea and he was not involved.

Jarrod Henderson is also charged with terrorizing, a Class C felony, violation of a protection order, a Class A misdemeanor, and simple assault-domestic violence, a Class B misdemeanor in the most recent incidents.
