Sheriff trial delayed

The jury trial of suspended Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski has been delayed. The trial was to have begun with jury selection yesterday. However, the North Dakota Supreme Court ordered a temporary stay in the matter for a period of no longer than 14 days.

As of late Tuesday, no new trial date had been set. Judge Lolita G. Hartl Romanick of Grand Forks has been assigned to hear the case.

Kukowski is charged with one count of public servant refusing to perform duty and two counts of reckless endangerment. All three charges are Class A misdemeanors punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and a $500 fine.
