Man awaits trial on sexual assault charge

Hove

A 69-year-old Minot man is set to go to trial March 20 on a charge that he sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl more than a year ago. The trial is projected to last five days for Lorin Walter Hove.

Hove is charged with a Class AA felony that could send him to prison for life without parole.

Hove appeared at a hearing on Wednesday in district court in Minot, where his lawyer Ashley Gulke asked the judge to schedule a bond reduction hearing for Hove. Hove has a medical condition and wants to receive treatment at a Veteran’s Administration hospital. A lawyer for the state said Hove could be treated at Trinity Hospital in Minot but has refused to go to a scheduled appointment. Hove has been held in the state’s custody since his arrest. Judge Stacy Louser said she would need to know more about what kind of medical treatment Hove requires and how long his recovery would take. Louser said she will not delay the start of the trial again.

According to court documents, Hove was arrested in October 2015 and charged after a man called police and reported that he had caught Hove attempting to have sex with his daughter.

Hove’s blood alcohol level was .02 when he was taken into custody, based on statements made at his initial appearance on the charge. Court records show that a Lorin Walter Hove has multiple convictions in Ward County for driving under the influence of alcohol dating back to at least 1984.
