Cresap charged with burglary
A 26-year-old Minot man is accused of getting very drunk on Nov. 21, 2016 and going into a neighbor’s unlocked apartment and digging around in his closet.
Alexander Charles Cresap is charged with Class B felony burglary, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Cresap’s neighbor was sitting on his couch at 2:45 a.m. on Nov. 21 when he heard the door to his apartment open. He said he looked over and saw Cresap digging in his hall closet. The man recognized Cresap as a neighbor who lived on the second floor of his building. The man said he chased Cresap out of his apartment. Cresap took the fire stairs and dropped the items he had taken from the closet. Then Cresap went into his own apartment. The man called police to report the burglary. Cresap later refused to come out of his apartment for officers when they arrived to investigate.
The resident of the other apartment picked Cresap out of a photo lineup on Dec. 14. On Dec. 15, Cresap agreed to come to the police department to be interviewed about the incident. According to the affidavit, Cresap said he was very drunk on Nov. 21 when he opened the unlocked door to the other man’s apartment. Cresap said he wasn’t sure if he did or did not dig through the man’s closet, but admitted he ran away when the other man confronted him. Cresap told police he was sorry about what had happened.
Cresap is scheduled to make an initial appearance on the charge on Jan. 23 in district court in Minot. None of the district judges in Minot will handle the case. The case has been reassigned to South Central District Court Judge Sonna Anderson, who will appear via interactive television from Morton County.
