Nicholis Backman, Minot, charged with possession of stolen property
A 26-year-old Minot man is accused of being in possession of checks stolen from 701 Customs and C&K Properties when it was burglarized on Nov. 18.
Nicholis Jay Backman made an initial appearance on two counts of possession of stolen property on Wednesday in district court in Minot.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, a cab driver called police on Monday to report that Backman was trying to cash and pay for his fare with a stolen check.
The check belonging to 701 Customs was typed out to Nicholis Backman for $3,000, was dated Dec. 4 and was endorsed on the back by Backman. The owner of 701 Customs told police that Backman has never been employed by the business and they did not make out the check to him. When police searched Backman, they found another check from C&K Properties that was written to Backman for $4,500 and was endorsed by Backman.
If convicted of both Class C felony charges, Backman faces up to 10 years in prison.
