Minot Symphony Orchestra starts their 92nd year

On Oct. 7 at Ann Nicole Nelson Hall, the Minot Symphony Orchestra will play its first performance of its 92nd season.

The season is named The Wheel of Fortune with the first performance called Forever Love.

“The whole season is called The Wheel of Fortune mainly as a reference to our last concert which will involve a lot of community organizations like the Chamber Chorale, the Minot High School choirs, the MSU Concert Choir, the WPO Children’s Chores, etc. Each concert does have a title more specific to what we’re performing in that concert,” Amaya Efrain, the conductor of the symphony said.

A lot of things are taken in to consideration when choosing the music for a concert. In this specific case, there are no soloists, so Efrain wanted to take the opportunity to let the Orchestra shine. Since the theme of the concert is love, Efrain paired Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 2 from his ballet music with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy for the first part of the performance. After the intermission, he chose Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, op. 39.

“Sibelius Symphony No. 1 doesn’t really relate to Romeo and Juliet per se, nor to Shakespeare, however Sibelius was very much influenced by Tchaikovsky and one could hear it very much so if comparing it with Tchaikovsky’s Pathetic symphony in the same e minor key,” Efrain said about why he chose that piece.

The Minot Symphony Orchestra works hard to bring the performances to the audiences, practicing every Thursday for roughly six weeks, depending on the concert and where it falls in relationship to the previous concert, according to Efrain.

The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $25. Tickets can be purchased online at www.minotsymphony.com or by phone at 858-4228.
