Do’s and don’t of dorm decor at Minot State

Submitted Photo Minot State students enjoy bringing a taste of home – and style – to their dorm rooms.

With the new school year having started, most college students are already in their residence halls and adjusting to the new year.

Most college residence halls can be plain and straight forward, so it can make it hard to feel at home in a room so different than from their old bedroom.

Two girls in Texas recently renovated their dull dorm room into a space all their own. Each college has their own rules, though, so Minot State University shared what students can and cannot do to make their room personal and relaxing.

According to MSU Residence Life Coordinator Camila Van Dyke, “they are allowed to decorate their room as they want to make it look like a home. We actually encourage them to decorate and have items that reminds them of their family/hometown.”

The biggest rules, according to the Residence Hall Handbook, is no cooking appliances, especially microwaves and other appliances with hot plates. Van Dyke did say students are allowed to have Keurigs, so coffee addicts won’t have to worry.

Students are allowed to hang posters, have rugs, have lamps, and really anything else as long as they don’t use tacks, nails, or duct tape.

If you’re a student in a residence hall, don’t worry. You have quite a bit of decorating freedom to make your sleeping place cozy.
