Missionaries to speak about Slovenia Sunday in Kenmare

Missionaries Dom and Linda Vetter of Bismarck will speak at 10 a.m. Sunday at Alive Christian Fellowship, located at 203 4th Avenue SE in Kenmare, about their mission trips to Slovenia.

Dom Vetter said Wednesday that the couple has traveled to the former communist country up to 10 times during the past eight years.

Dom Vetter had been a pastor for about 35 years when he felt the call to become a full-time missionary to a country he barely knew existed at the time.

“(God) gave me a very clear direction to go to this country,” he said.

Slovenia, a former republic of Yugoslavia, is located in central Europe. It is bordered by Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia in the middle of the European continent. Vetter said he has found Slovenians, a Slavic people, to be quiet and hard-working. Slovenia might get more attention now because it is the native country of new first lady Melania Trump, said Dom Vetter.

The Vetters, who are evangelical Christians, have focused their efforts on bringing the word of God to Slovenians and helping Christians in Slovenia to open churches in different towns across the country. They also help fund the translation of Christian literature into Slovenian, the native language.

Dom Vetter said the Christian influence in Slovenia had pretty much been killed off by the Yugoslavian government during the days of communist rule. Catholic churches were turned into museums and practicing Christians in the country were denied access to good jobs and higher education.

Dom Vetter said they have worked with different Christian groups in Slovenian towns who meet in private homes in house churches. Renting a building in town to hold church services can be quite expensive. They have more flexibility to work with different church groups because they are non-denominational.

Dom Vetter said it is also important to provide Christian works in the native Slovene language, since there haven’t been many published.

Anyone who would like to donate to the Vetters’ mission work can send donations to Vetter Global Outreach Ministries, 647 Bridgeport Drive, Bismarck, ND 58504.
