Mother’s Day is just a few days away – Sunday, May 13 – and a time when many people purchase flowers for their moms.

Scott Bethke of Season’s, a flower shop in downtown Minot, said mixed flowers are very popular for Mother’s Day.

“I think anything bright and vivid to grab someone’s eyes – they’re going to go for that,” said Bethke, while arranging a brightly colored mixed bouquet with purple tulips, gerbera daisies and other lively colored flowers.

“Just bright, springy because in most of the United States and up here it’s been cold and ready for a spring event,” he added.

He said some people have a tradition they keep to always get their mother for Mother’s Day for example a certain color of rose.

Mother’s Day and many of the other holidays often are last-minute purchases for people. “So you try to have enough ahead to help those people that come in and say, ‘Hey, do you have something ready for me to grab and go?’ “ he said.

Bethke said succulents and air plants are a “hot item” on social media and popular gifts now.

“I see the succulents going over really well during Mother’s Day because they can be brought in during the winter,” he said.

“Air plants are a little plant that looks like a creature because there’s all different varieties of them. It’s become kind of a trend right now in the industry. They don’t take any soil, they don’t have to have a vase, they don’t have to have a container. You could have them hanging in something that’s suspended,” he said.

The air plants just need to be soaked in water about once a week for not more than 20 minutes.

“It seems like house plants are making a comeback,” he said. He said people might have a space in the home they would like to fill with a plant or have a plant to freshen the air.

Season’s is at the location that once was Sullivan’s Floral, a popular Minot floral shop for many years. Bethke has been designing flowers for over 25 years.
