2.5 million hours worked without injury earns Hess construction team industry accolades

The Hess Bakken Facilities Construction Team earned an industry award this summer after working more than 2.5 million hours without a recordable injury.

At a celebration during the Colorado Oil & Gas Association’s Energy Summit in Denver, the team earned the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Award for excellence in health and safety.

“It was a team effort from our employees and our partner contractors to improve processes and behaviors to achieve top quartile safety performance,” said Brandon Herda, Manager, Environmental Health and Safety for the Hess Bakken Well Factory and Infrastructure Team. “This is more than seeking a trophy for a shelf. This award recognizes the hundreds and hundreds of workers, who consistently take pride in their work, show respect for each other and a commitment to working safely.”

In the past three years, the Hess Bakken Facilities Construction Team, which includes Hess employees and contractors, worked more than 2.5 million hours without a recordable injury, while also reducing high-potential incidents and first aid cases.

The award application detailed how the Facilities Construction Team improved its safety record through the use of Lean methodologies, behavior-based safety observations, contractor field safety engagements and leadership site visits. There is a motto the entire Hess team believes in, “Everyone, Everywhere, Everyday Home Safe.”

Now in their fifth year, the Oil and Gas Awards celebrate excellence in environmental stewardship, health and safety, corporate social responsibility, operational excellence, and innovation. The Rocky Mountain region runs west to the U.S. Pacific coast from North Dakota, South Dakota, central Nebraska, Colorado and New Mexico..
