Meet the artist: Abby Lynn Hagel
Current Hometown: Minot, originally from Gresham, Ore.
Where can we see your work?
Abbyhagel.com or my Facebook page: @abbylynnhagel or you can see several pet portrait canvases on display at Love On A Leash Dog Grooming.
Do you have work for sale?
I take commissions for anything you would like done in my specific style. The price is quoted based on the complexity of the request. They will receive a high resolution .jpg of the image, and if they would like a physical print they can request an additional quote.
In what media do you work?
I use a combination of digital and traditional media. I start with pencil and paper, then I scan the sketch into my PC and digitally watercolor it.
How would you describe your style?
I like accurate and strong linework to be the focus of the piece with simple coloring added to give a specific vibe or emotion to the piece. I draw a lot of family and pet portraits for business but when I draw for myself, I choose more surreal themes and characters or anatomy and scenery studies.
Who would you say have been influences on your work?
My dad has always been the biggest supporter of my work and encouraged me to study and practice even before I had any measurable skill. He even wrote a children’s book for me to illustrate which is completed and being prepared for publishing.
What do you most enjoy about the creative process?
I enjoy the confidence that comes from investing in a skill that will always have value to me, and I feel lucky that I have the ability to show what’s in my heart on paper.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a self-taught artist I began studying intensively in 2015 and began taking commissions regularly in 2016. I like to practice on my friends and draw their likeness, or draw out dreams my friends or I have and attempt to get the atmosphere correct. I try to improve every day and plan on illustrating full time.
