ND photographer captures world famous collection

Submitted Photo “Hens and Chicks, The Vitko Collection,” by North Dakota photographer Kari Barchenger, was inspired by Minot native Don Vitko and contains more than 220 images showcasing cacti and succulents.

Inspired by the wondrous beauty provided by the International Peace Garden, Kari Barchenger, a North Dakota photographer, has captured the splendor of world class cacti and stunning succulents presented in 2009, by Don Vitko, a Minot native, in her recent book titled “Hens and Chicks, The Vitko Collection.”

Throughout Barchenger’s book is the inspiring story of a boy who started with a packet of seeds and eventually ends up with a world class collection of more than 4,000 different species and 6,500 plants.

“Hens and Chicks, The Vitko Collection” contains more than 220 images showcasing the beauty and unique symmetry of the plants, along with many rare plants that most collectors have only heard of.

The book is meant to be a learning tool containing information on the anatomy of the plants, everyday uses and fun facts, written for the casual reader and will be a great resource.

To discover the awe-inspiring photographs and story found in “Hens and Chicks, The Vitko Collection,” Barchengers latest book is sold at Main Street Books and Lowe’s Floral and Garden Center.
